Lettering vs. Calligraphy

Today is the last day of this letter exhibition at Mota Italic, featuring the work of letterer, Martina Flor and calligrapher, Giuseppe Salerno.

Each Berlin based designer draws/writes a letter chosen each day. They explore the different possibilities of each glyph in a similar way to ‘letter battles’ such as Type Fight, AlphaboutAlphaBattle and the fun LetterPlayground.

The two technical approaches have produced some lovely work. It’s a shame I’ve missed the show, however you can see more of the work online.

Type Fighters

I love this decorative 3 by Alex Perez. It was created for the brilliant Type Fight project.

If you aren’t familiar with the concept, the Type Fight creators —Drew Roper, Ryan Paule & Bryan Butler — invite two designers to draw the same character and pitch them against each another in a battle for votes.

There can be only one winner.  Alex’s 3 won again Neil Rook’s version.

Above are some other excellent type scraps from their archive. It’s well worth a look.
